Angling Club
This plaque is located on the Lake Cobden walking track, Peter St.
The club, formed on November 1st, 1926, was first known as the Cobden Fish Protection Society. Club president for the first three years was Dr A H Barrett.
On September 2nd, 1954, its name changed to the Cobden Amateur Angling Club Inc.
The fish hatchery was built in 1932, adjacent to Lake Cobden – on the downstream side of the overflow before the swimming pool.
About 60,000 ova (equal numbers of quinat salmon, rainbow trout and brown trout) were successfully grown to a size ready to survive in Lake Bullen Merri. The club is an organisation that provides for the needs of the angler through regular meetings, competitions and by providing a forum to discuss relevant angling and environmental issues.
A key objective of our club is to promote junior angling, and encourage fishing as a family sport. Regular competitions are held at Lake Cobden and in the district’s hot spots for men, women and children in both salt and fresh water.
The club is actively involved in local events like the Cobden Spring Festival and it also holds a White Elephant Sale every two years.
Currently, the membership is more than 100-strong with adult, junior and family member categories.
The club is involved in maintaining the clubrooms and foreshore at Lake Elingamite where monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month from 8pm. Guest speakers and card competitions are often on the agenda which ensures that both business and laughter are the focus.
New members are welcome. For further information, contact a club member.
