The Rotary Club of Cobden

  • The club was formed in March 1966 with 25 members.
  • Typically, for the time, they were all male with women first joining in 2002.
  • During the first 50 years of the club, there have been 150 members.
  • Meetings have always been held at the Cobden Civic Hall.
  • For the first 40 years, the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Cobden Bush Nursing Hospital provided a three-course dinner for every meeting.
  • Overseas Youth Exchange has seen the club host 17 students from a wide range of countries, while 18 local students have been able to travel overseas through this program, staying 12 months at a time.
  • The club has been very active in hosting Youth Leadership programs held at Kangaroobie (Princetown) each year.
  • The club sponsored the formation of a Rotaract Club for young adults in 1975. Sadly, this did not continue for long.
  • Citizenship awards, and literacy and welfare support for our three schools, have been a major part of our youth activities.
  • The club, together with the South Western Model Engineers, established the award-winning Cobden Miniature Railway in 1995.
  • The Cobden Connection which featured exchange visits between the five Cobdens of the world was strongly supported by the club. A commemorative rotunda was built in 1998.
  • The Cobden mini golf course was established in 2000 by the club.
  • An Annual Fun Run, Business Excellence Awards and New Year’s Eve Family Fireworks have all been major community projects.
